Arts

What is the significance of ARTS in the MYP?

Arts

Arts stimulate young imaginations, challenge perceptions and develop creative and analytical skills.

Involvement in the arts encourages students to understand the arts in context and the cultural histories of artworks, supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic world view.

Arts challenge and enrich personal identity and build awareness of the aesthetic in a real-world context.

FINE ARTS

The PMS Fine Arts programs are among the best that Pinckneyville and Gwinnett County has to offer. Over 600 students (50%+ of the student body) participate in Band, Orchestra, and Chorus. Students elect to join these outstanding ensembles in 6th grade, and many choose to stay throughout middle school and into high school as well. The PMS Fine Arts consistently receive Excellent and Superior ratings given by the Georgia Music Educator’s Association (GMEA), as well has have students participate in additional prestigious events such as All-State, Solo & Ensemble, District Honor Band/Orchestra/Chorus, GCPS Kendall Youth Orchestra, UGA’s Midfest Band Clinic, among others.

The Fine Arts department believes in helping students grow as individuals through music – not just academically, but as a member of a group and society. They learn dedication, effort, collaboration, leadership, responsibility, and cooperation through learning music and performing as an ensemble. Students that participate in the Fine Arts often have self-improvement and growth as they apply these principles to their daily lives. The students that continue in these programs also have the added benefit of having a teacher that knows them well and can help guide them throughout this transitional period of middle school.

The PMS Fine Arts believes in serving the community by providing music and musical experiences in multiple events throughout the year. Some of these include Hispanic Heritage Night, The Norcross eSTEAM Fair, Southern Star Music Festival, the Peacthree Corners Holiday Glow, Black History Month celebrations, the annual POPS! Concert, and similar events. We are fortunate that we have a community that supports us and are appreciative of all the families that have entrusted us with their children’s musical education.

VISUAL ARTS

The visual arts program offers explorations in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. Students will also learn about the history, analysis, and interpretation of art.
